Wood Highlights

MAD’s collection of wood represents over 10% of the Museum’s permanent collection. We are proud to have several iconic pieces in the collection, including Sam Maloof’s "Rocking Chair" and Wendell Castle’s "Music Rack." Other well known pieces include Frank Gehry’s "Power Play Armchair" and the "Hammer Handle Chairs" by Wharton Esherick. The collection also showcases a wide range of woodworking techniques, from the lathe-turned pieces by Edward Moulthrop and Bob Stocksdale to hand-carved furniture by Wendy Maruyama. Liv Blåvarp and Marjorie Schick created stunning jewelry from wood, while Donald Fortescue’s obsessively crafted sculptural work reiterates the variety of possibilities of this material.
