Katherine Westphal has worked in both academia and industry. She taught at the University of Wyoming, the University of Washington, and the University of California, Davis. In addition, she designed clothing fabric for mass production. In her own work, Westphal became known for her spontaneous inventiveness, irreverent humor, and her use of a wide variety of techniques, including tie dye, screen printing, batik, block printing, and embroidery stitching. She was a formative influence on fiber artists of the post-World War II generation.
