Georges JeanclosFrance, 1933–1997

The late Georges Jeanclos was born in Paris to Jewish parents, before the outbreak of World War II. The Nazi occupation of Paris forced Jeanclos and his family into hiding. After the war, Jeanclos apprenticed to a sculptor. This led him to study art at the renowned École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After graduating in 1959, Jeanclos studied with French modernist painter Balthus at the Villa Medici in Rome. The strongest influences on Jeanclos's work were: his hiding during World War II, his apprenticeship to a sculptor and his fascination with Etruscan art, which he discovered while in Rome.
