Michael Cummings

After moving from Los Angeles to New York, Michael Cummings trained at the Arts Students League and received a B.A. from Empire State College. He began his artistic career as a painter, and then turned to quilting as a way to speak about social and cultural history. He is a self-taught quilter and has been making narrative quilts since the 1970s. He has been an artist in residence for the New York Foundation for the Arts, taught classes at PS 129 in Harlem, and worked for the New York Council on the Arts for 14 years.
