Peter JacobiGermany, b. 1935

Ritzi and Peter Jacobi were both born and raised in Romania. They are primarily known for their collaboration on monumental tapestries. From 1965 to 1980, they produced large tapestry wall hangings that emphasized the materiality of fiber and its sculptural possibilities. These wall hangings emerged from their experimentation with fiber, wooden elements, fiber cables and woven boxes in the 1960's, a time that Peter Jacobi defines as "…very experimental, and, politically, increasingly open, even in the East European countries." (quote taken from an interview held at the 9th Lausanne Biennale of Tapestry, copy in Artists's File) In 1972, the Jacobis moved to Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine, where as visiting professors they were strong advocates of fiber as an art form.
