Michael ShulerUnited States, b. 1950
Mike Shuler is a self-taught wood artist who first turned wood at age fourteen, in 1964, in his father's basement shop. Instantly attracted to woodworking, and the lathe in particular, Shuler developed and honed his turning skills in his high school Industrial Arts program. Since graduating high school, he has been a self employed woodworker, and has used the lathe extensively for antique restoration and furniture making. In 1970, Shuler began creating sculptural vessels, and in early 1985, developed his signature laminating technique in which he creates intricate patterns by laminating thousands of small pieces from different wood species together before turning.
