Rudolf Staffel developed an interest in art as a teenager, when he became attracted to Chinese and Japanese brushwork. After studying painting and glassblowing briefly, he turned to ceramics. Working in clay for six decades, Staffel also belonged to the faculty of the Tyler School of Art in Pennsylvania for nearly 40 years. In the 1950s, he began working with porcelain and has mainly used this type of clay ever since, exploring the translucence of the material.
