Educated at the School for the American Craftsman at Alfred University, Betty Woodman has gained an international reputation for her work with colorful glazes, and imaginative ceramic and glass shapes. She began her career making functional pieces, such as dinner sets and decorative bowls, later moving toward more the sculptural and conceptual work for which she is known. In addition, she used several historical references, including Etruscan, Minoan, Tang Dynasty, Majolica, and Sevres. Woodman is an example of an accomplished artist and teacher, receiving two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and teaching at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
