Wendell Castle began making furniture in the late 1950s. His earlier pieces were based on industrial design concepts and processes. Later in his career, he turned to more sculptural, non-utilitarian designs. He became a major force in the growing insterest in handcrafted furniture in mainstream America. He is known for his superior craftsmanship, exotic materials, and visual humor. In addition to creating his own work, Castle taught at the Rochester Institute of Technology for several decades.
