Barbara Engle
"Since 1939 Barbara Engle, who is married to the actor Peter Whitney, has divided her residency between Hawaii and southern California. She began her professional career as a painter, exhibiting widely in Hawaii and on the West Coast. Only recently did she turn to jewelry, starting first with forged silver. Her interest then turned to shapes which could be carved from bone. Most of her present compositions involve the interplay of silver bones. The ornaments are personal and feel crafted, oriented in fact to primitive work, which is undoubtedly due to a trip through the South Sea Islands and to having lived for several months in Tahiti and New Zealand."
