Viola FreyUnited States, 1933–2004

Viola Frey received her B.F.A. from the California College of the Arts and Crafts (today the California College of Arts) where she studied painting and an M.F.A. from Tulane University in ceramics. Her robust work with clay in the 1950s and 1960s, which was part of a movement away from the delicacy traditionally associated with ceramics, is related to abstract expressionist painting, pop art, and California Funk. She later taught at the California College of Arts for over thirty years.
