After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree, Douglas Fuchs lived and worked with the aboriginal people of Australia, during which time he developed insight into the use of non-precious materials and basket-weaving techniques for body ornaments. Fuchs's jewelry emphasizes texture, color, surface decoration, myth, and ritual. In 1981, Fuchs received fellowships from both the National Endowment for the Arts and the Australian Crafts Council. Before his death in 1986, Fuchs worked as a basketry instructor in the New York City public schools and at the New School for Social Research in New York City.
