Verne Funk
"Although his first pottery course was with Claude Horan at the University of Hawaii in 1954, Funk did not become seriously involved with clay until the early sixties, when he received his master's degree under Robert Schellin at the University of Wisconsin. Schellin's influence was toward intellectual analysis and aesthetic refinement to the smallest detail, resulting in an elegance that has since marked most of Funk's work. After studying with Bob Arneson at Haystack Mountain School in 1967 he came to be more involved with the object as an end in itself, and began creating machine forms with human elements. However, in addition to object ideas and machines, he has continued his refined approach, often using dull black stoneware contrasted with luster areas."
