James Leedy

Artist Info
James LeedyUnited States, b. 1930

"Leedy is an artist and an art historian who has taught painting, printmaking, sculpture, and design, but his favorite medium is clay. His ceramic forms are intricate constructions of sculptured parts, often incorporating wheel-thrown pieces, 'found objects,' and mold-pressed forms. Rich earth tones and salt glazes characterize much of his work, but he occasionally uses bright paints, which are applied after firing. Working with clay slabs which are folded and shaped by hand, Leedy produces sculptural pieces which often have a fetishistic quality reminiscent of primitive ritual figures, yet the evidence of social and personal symbols reveals, perhaps, the essence of 'Everyman.'"
