K. Lee Manuel was drawn to art in college. She was determined to make part of everyday life and therefore focused on wearable art. She began by painting garments for her growing family. Now, Manuel is perhaps best known for the garments she creates, some of which incorporate thousands of feathers and are evocative of clothing used in ceremonies in non-Western cultures. Her richly complex pieces are sought by both collectors and connoisseurs.
