BiographyGyöngy Laky was born in Budapest in 1944. She studied fiber arts and basketry at the University of California at Berkeley, where she earned both her B.A. and M.A. degrees and where she was mentored by Berkeley professor, seminal fiber artist Ed Rossbach. In 1973, Laky returned from India, where she was exploring the intersections between textiles and daily life. From this trip, Laky founded Fiberworks Center for the Textile Arts in Berkeley. Another preferred medium for Laky is wood, which she uses often for its solidity and organic feeling. Laky is also Professor Emerita of the University of California, Davis.
