BiographyMasakazu Kobayashi was born in 1944 in Kyoto, Japan and attended Kyoto University of Arts from 1963-1966. He specialized in lacquer, but went on to create installations using a variety of materials. He began teaching as a professor at the Okayama Prefectural University in 1995, while simultaneously working as an artist. Since 1995, he participated in in numerous international group exhibitions, and had regular solo exhibitions in Japan's finest galleries. His work is featured in the public collections of several museums including the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, USA, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Museum of Art in Osaka and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Kobayashi was the recipient of the National Museum of Modern Art prize in 1978, an Outstanding Award at the International Textile Competition Kyoto (1987), Excellence award at the 4th International Textile Competition Kyoto (1994) and a Gold medal at the 1996 6th Kyoto Art Festival. Kobayashi passed away in 2004.
