Place of BirthWaterville, Maine, United States
BiographyOne of the Pacific Northwest's most noted potters, La Verdiere was an active and versatile monk of St. Martin's Abbey (near Olympia, Washington) as an artist-in-residence, until 1969, when he left the Order to marry. His pottery has been both functional and free form, both figurative and abstract. Discussing one of his earlier pots with a nativity scene, La Verdiere commented: 'I had a basic idea I wanted to say something profound, simply.' In quite a different mode the craftsman has recently created a series of ceramic horns, meant to hang from the ceiling, that function--that blow! La Verdiere could also be called 'peripatetic,' for a good part of each year is generously spent teaching workshop classes across the country.
