BiographyGonçalo Mabunda was born in Maputo Mabunda in 1975. He studied at the Núcleo de Arte artists' collective in Maputo in 1992. In 1998, Mabunda participated in Transforming Weapons into Art Objects, a project that allows artists to make works from the guns of the Civil War (1975-1994) in Mozambique. Today, he creates saxophones from bazookas, turning violence into music.

Gonçalo Mabunda has exhibited his work worldwide. In 2008, he had a solo show, My New Voice, at Afronova in Johannesburg, Africa. He also participated in Africa Remix, 2004-2007, a group exhibition that traveled to Düsseldorf, London, Paris, Stockholm, Tokyo, and Johannesburg. Mabunda's work is in the collection of the Tropen Museum, Netherlands; the Arme Museum, Stockholm, Sweden; and in numerous private collections
