El Anatsui

Ghana, b. 1944
BiographyEl Anatsui was born and raised in Anyako, Ghana. He obtained a bachelor's degree in sculpture and a postgraduate diploma in art education from the University of Science and Technology, Kamasi, Ghana. Anatsui is currently Professor of Sculpture at the University of Nigeria, where he has taught since 1975.

El Anatsui has been exhibiting worldwide since the 1970s. He received an honorable mention at the Venice Biennale in 1990, and he exhibited at the 1995 Johannesburg Biennale, South Africa and the 2004 Gwanju Biennale, South Korea. Anatsui's work has been collected by institutions all over the world, including the British Museum, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; de Young Museum, San Francisco; and the Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C.
