BiographyBorn in 1967, Andy Diaz Hope grew up in San Francisco, California, amid a family of scientists and artists: his mother was a mathematician and painter, his grandmother was a chemist and painted as well, and his grandfather was a research scientist. Diaz Hope followed in the footsteps of his family, earning a BS in engineering with a joint major in design from Stanford University in 1989. For his thesis project, he designed a tricycle with an intravenous pump for terminally ill children, allowing them to ride without the assistance of a nurse. Diaz Hope continued his studies at Stanford, completing his MS in the same joint engineering/design program in 1992. Shortly after graduation, he started his own business in furniture design, and from 1996-2004, he worked in corporate design.While Andy Diaz Hope has been making art since college, he has rarely exhibited until 2004. Since then, he has participated in several exhibitions including shows at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia (2004); London Crafts Council, London (2005); John Michael Kohler Art Center, Sheboygan, Wisconsin (2006); and at Schroeder Romero Gallery, New York (2007).
